Spot the exam error

Real VCE Mathematical Methods questions where the exam writers slipped up, plus a few that are perfectly sound. Read each one like an examiner: pick what is wrong, then see what happened.

Read it like the examiner who should have caught it.

Each card shows a question exactly as it was set in a VCE Mathematical Methods exam. Most contain a real mistake by the exam writers: a missing condition, an impossible answer, a wrong published solution. A few are completely sound, so do not assume there is always something to find.

  1. Study the question. Tap a printed question to see it larger.
  2. Pick the diagnosis you think is right. Add your reasoning if you like, then press Check.
  3. A wrong pick gets a margin note on why it does not hold, and a hint, without giving the answer away. Try again.
  4. The right pick shows what went wrong, the full reasoning, how sure we are, and the sources.

Less certain cards are ones where the alleged error could not be fully confirmed, sits in VCAA's published solutions rather than the question, or is no longer visible on the printed page. Each is labelled when you meet it.
